How Fantail Reached 50 Million Views
Share
We posted a simple video of Fantail online. Just a video showing the product and the airflow. We thought a few people might relate to it, maybe leave some comments, maybe share it around a little.
Instead, it quickly turned into something way bigger than we ever expected.
At the time of writing this, the video has now passed 50 million views on our Instagram @fantailsleep, which still feels surreal. We built something for ourselves because we just hated sleeping hot, and apparently a lot of other people do too!
Why Did We Go Viral?
This is a question we have asked ourselves many times. Whilst we are no expert on the intricacies of the algorithm, there are definitely a few things that may have helped.
The video was short, easy to understand and grabbed attention in the first couple of seconds. The text on screen "this & better sleep" made the benefit obvious straight away and combined with a great soundtrack which matched the airflow reveal perfectly, it created an eye catching video. From there, the comments and shares really took over. For a lot of people, Fantail was something unique they’d never seen before so they wanted to show it to others.
Of course there was probably a huge amount of luck involved too. There are heaps of great products and videos online that never get seen. We’re just grateful this one connected with so many people.
The Problem Was Bigger Than We Thought
The biggest thing this experience has taught us is that the problem is far more common than we realised. Before Fantail, we thought sleeping hot was one of those annoying little issues people just put up with. You wake up sweaty, fight over the fan, crank the AC all night, or spend half the night flipping the pillow over looking for the cold side.
But once this video started taking off, we were suddenly reading thousands and thousands of comments from people saying things like “I need this,” “this is a game changer!” and “how can I get one!”
That was probably the moment where things properly clicked for us. The views themselves were exciting, but the comments explained alot. They made us realise Fantail wasn’t solving some small problem for a small group of people, it was a big problem impacting heaps of people every single night.
People Care About Comfort, Not Specs
As founders, it’s easy to get caught up focusing on technical details but most people in the comments weren’t talking about any of that. They were talking about finally getting a better sleep, surviving summer, not overheating next to their partner, relief from hot flashes or just making sleep more comfortable.
That was actually a pretty important lesson for us. People don’t connect with products because of a spec sheet. They connect with how a product makes them feel and the problem it solves in their day-to-day life.
Going Viral Doesn’t Build the Business
At the same time, going viral also gave us a reality check. A video blowing up online is obviously exciting, but it doesn’t magically build the business for you.
Behind the scenes, there’s still manufacturing, logistics, product improvements, customer support, inventory planning, and about a hundred other things constantly happening in the background. The viral moment opened the door for Fantail, but now the real challenge is building something great long term and making sure the product lives up to the attention.
People Connect With What Feels Real
One thing we’ve been really grateful for throughout all of this is how many people connected with the journey itself. Most of our content hasn’t been polished or heavily produced. A lot of it was filmed casually while figuring things out as we went, and honestly some of the content has been a bit rough around the edges. But weirdly, those were often the ones people responded to the most.
We think people are pretty good these days at spotting what feels genuine. They want to see the real process, not just perfectly polished ads pretending everything is effortless. That’s probably been one of the coolest parts of the whole experience, seeing people follow along and understand the benefit of Fantail.
The Best is Still to Come
Even with 50 million views, it still feels like we’re only at the beginning. We’re still improving the product, still learning, still making mistakes, and still figuring a lot of things out as we go.
The biggest thing this experience gave us wasn’t just attention, it gave us confidence that this is a problem worth solving.
We think people are looking for simple products that genuinely make everyday life a bit better. That’s what we’re trying to build with Fantail, and we’re really grateful to everyone who’s followed along so far.
