Our Story
Hi, we’re Nick and Kelsie.
Originally from New Zealand, we moved to Sydney nearly ten years ago and quickly discovered one of the biggest challenges of Australian summers - restless, sweltering hot nights. Like many homes here, ours didn’t have air conditioning, and we soon realised we weren’t alone. Many of our friends and colleagues were also struggling to get a good night's sleep due to the heat.
We needed a solution, something more effective and targeted than a pedestal fan or AC. That’s when Nick, an engineer, began experimenting with ways to keep cool while sleeping. Through countless tests and prototypes, he refined a design that worked: a fan that could be used directly in bed, delivering cooling air where it’s needed most.
That design became Fantail.
Our name is inspired by the New Zealand Fantail (Pīwakawaka), a small native bird known for its distinctive fanned tail and energy. It's a symbol of home for us, and its compact, agile nature inspired Fantail's small yet powerful design.
It’s taken us over two years to get Fantail to this point, simply because quality and functionality matter to us. We’ve obsessed over the details, tested endlessly, and only moved forward when it truly worked. Finally, we have designed an in bed fan that’s energy efficient, quiet, super quick to install and compact enough to blend in with your bed setup. Its lightweight, compact design also means you can pack it in a bag, making it perfect for home and travel alike.
In early 2025, we released a small run of Fantail units. The response was incredibly encouraging. Hearing how much it genuinely helped with comfort and sleep confirmed we were onto something.
We’re now preparing for the first production run of our improved bed fan and doing everything we can to get it to more people, as soon as possible.
